Chapter Twelve

Go into the light, or not, take your pick.

We completed the ride back to my house in blissful silence. Dangerous Dave kept his opinions to himself after his declaration that I’d successfully challenged the Principal of North America. If the dead didn’t kill me, Hudson Abbot would. We swung a left and pulled through the wrought-iron gates that wrapped around my estate. The boundary wards clanging in my mind. I felt like shouting, ‘It’s me, you idiot.’

“Expecting company?” Dave asked.

I pulled my gaze from the side window and let out a string of curses as I spied several familiar cars dumped in the drive. They were a day early. I needed rest and quiet, not an interrogation that would impress the man sitting next to me. “Family reunion.”

He frowned. “I see.”

No, he really didn’t. I’d put money on Dave having a dossier on Cora Roberts somewhere in his neat freak office. He wouldn’t work with me unless he felt he could trust me to a certain extent. That initial search would turn up the facts; a girl who never knew her father and lost her mother to depression. A fully qualified medical doctor who inherited Summer Grove House following her aunt’s death with a scattering of female family members around the country who rarely got together. That is what I wanted people to find. The reality was always more twisted, deeper and complex. Him knowing my gift was enough; I didn’t owe him my private life. He spun the car in a tight circle, stopping at the bottom of the steps.

“Thanks for the lift,” I said, unclipping my seat belt.

“You’re welcome. I have a few chores in town, then I will be back.”

My head snapped to him. “Why?”

“Hudson explained we would keep you safe.”

I rolled my eyes. More like Hudson was keeping a firm eye on me.

“Do you need help into the house?” Dave asked.

I shot him a look over my shoulder as I opened the car door. “I can manage.”

He chuckled as I slammed the door closed. He peeled out of the driveway and out through the gates. If I stalled any longer… The front door swung open… I sighed. They would come investigate.

A tall slender woman wrapped in a designer pale blue skirt suit stepped through the door, her brunette hair cut into a classic long bob. Her regal features ensured she ruled the boardroom ruthlessly. She popped a plucked eyebrow at me as I hobbled up the stairs. They had given me a pair of sweatpants and a matching top. Aunt Liz’s disgust at my attire was as clear as the Louisiana sky. A bundle of honeyed blonde hair pushed past Aunt Liz with a squeal. Aunt Dayna bounded down the stairs, her skirts jingling with hundreds of tiny metal discs, and wrapped her arms around my waist. I grimaced as she squeezed.

“Dayna, put the girl down, can’t you see she’s injured,” Aunt Liz tsked.

Dayna dropped her arms and stood back, scanning me from head to foot.
